Having recently travelled to Greece, I wanted to write an
article about how this trip has been so inspiring to me. The way the people of Santorini
and Crete (both islands I visited) live is so simple and they infuse that into their
decorating/design. We stayed in a traditional “cave” in Oia on the island of
Santorini and it was simply decorated with white stucco walls and blue windows
and trim, tile floors and white linens.
While walking through Oia, the marble stone walkways parted
the coloured, stucco storefronts and venders that sold various Greek silks,
prints and traditional souvenirs. Amongst the storefronts were various
restaurants cooking traditional Greek dishes. They were delicious!
While sitting at your table, eating a delectable freshly
made slice of bread with authentic olive pâté and homemade mayonnaise, you can
look out into the caldera and see various houses in various hues with a Greek
blue dome dotting the view.
The view is amazing and the sun is so warm on your skin that
you are completely in paradise. I found this place so beautiful that it made
taking pictures so easy. Words that come to mind when I think about being there
include; magnificent, simple, traditional, elegant, colourful, amazing… to say
a few… you need to truly experience the beauty of Oia, everyone should visit!
So I wanted to find some spaces that have been inspired by
the Greeks. Here is what I found. But before I show you, here are some things to
keep in mind when decorating a space around a Greek theme!
- Blue hues
- White walls
- Rich colours
- Gold and silver accents
- Columns
- Statues
- Stones
- Nautical elements
- Greek key design (a version shown in the pillows)
So without further ado, here are some spaces to inspire you!
